Kansas: GeoComply reveals 16,000 cross-border transactions
After Kansas sports betting soft-launched on September 1, more than 522,000 geolocation checks were carried out. FanDuel, DraftKings, PointsBet, and BetMGM were among those sportsbook operators launching in the state ahead of its formal launch on September 8. After the launch, Kansas GeoComply confirmed that the firm in the same period blocked more than 16,000 attempts to place bets by individuals in neighboring Missouri.
What is GeoComply?
The GeoComply technology checks a person’s location when placing a bet, assessing whether that individual is acting in compliance with state regulations. The location of an individual is verified more frequently when that individual is closer to a state border. To highlight, VPNs (virtual private networks) are illegal and are shown on the app’s software.
In comments reported by the Kansas City Star, GeoComply spokesperson John Pappas welcomed the launch, “It is quite impressive for a state the size of Kansas,” Pappas said. “I think there was a lot of pent-up demand for legal betting options in the state.”
Pappas confirmed that similar declined transaction numbers had been reported on the borders of Iowa and Illinois, both jurisdictions where regulated sports betting markets already operate. “We don’t do this because we want to stop people from this form of recreation,” Pappas said. “We do it because it’s required by federal and state law that individuals have to be located within the state,” he added.
BetMGM partners up with Kansas City Chiefs
In connection with the Sportsbook launch in Kansas on September 1, BetMGM announced its partnership with the National Football League’s (NFL) Chiefs ahead of the new season. The agreement states that the BetMGM sign will be present inside GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, and content will be featured across the Chiefs’ digital channels. Special offers, game day experiences, and prizes will also be available to fans and season ticket members.
Matt Prevost, BetMGM’s chief revenue officer, shared, “With a rich history and a passionate fan base, the Kansas City Chiefs are an ideal partner.”
BetMGM is one of four operators operating through an agreement with Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg. “We’re confident sports fans across the Sunflower State will enjoy the excitement of wagering with BetMGM,” said Adam Greenblatt, BetMGM’s chief executive. “We would like to thank the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission, Kansas Lottery, and Kansas Crossing Casino for being great partners and supporting our efforts.”

Maryland looking at new mobile betting license requirement
To give you some background, over the weekend, the Maryland legislature’s Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive, and Legislative Review (AELR) voted to approve regulations for mobile sports betting in the state. The launch in the state won’t happen until at least early 2023, potentially in time for the Super Bowl.
Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) developed new requirements for mobile sportsbook licenses. It requires a broad-based plan to encourage diversity among prospective operators. The operators have to submit the project within 30 days of license approval.
However, it is understood that while a diversity plan is required, any operator without it will not have their license canceled. This initiative comes as part of a statewide effort to increase diversity in sports betting.
To add, each plan must include strategies to increase diversity in the respective operator’s ownership and external contractor bodies used as well as details of events conducted to highlight and encourage diversity.
In the document, you could read, “Diversity may include, but is not limited to, diversity based on race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, disability status, and veteran status,” an addendum outlining the plan stated.
