Booty Bay

Sunny beaches, palm trees, rum, and toothless sailors. It is a theme we have grown well accustomed to, but I will be darned if it is not a welcome sight anyway. There is something about the freedom and riches about the pirate life that make it fit the pokie scene like a peg on the kneecap.

Pokie Overview

Booty Bay is a quirky machine in a bright and lighthearted packaging with a quite a few things going on. There is nothing too out of the ordinary graphically; pirate characters as high payer symbols, 17th century sailing equipment as mid payers and coins as low payers. The background is dominated by a tropical sea with a shipwreck and a typical skull-shaped mountain. There is a notable sandy square in the center of the view which will have a special function in the game, but more on that later.

Booty Bay multiplier

The structure of the pokie is a 5 by 5 grid where clusters (referring to a cluster formed by similar symbols landing adjacent in any of the four directions, anywhere on the grid) of six and above will form wins. Worth noting is that unlike many cluster pays there is no cascading effect, so symbols will not disappear and be replaced by new ones after winning.

There are nine regular symbols along with a Wild (that has a few special effects we will get into in a moment) and three special feature symbols. Outside of the wild, the white bearded captain symbol is the most lucrative. Landing a cluster of 18 or more of that symbol will net you 50 times the stake.

The RTP is a respectable 96.41%, a welcome figure given other providers’ recent propensity to release machines with lower RTP levels.

The max win (both observed during simulations and calculated theoretically) is 20,000 times stake. Not the highest figure Push Gaming have ever produced, but good enough to allow for plenty of dreams to spring up.

Base Game features in Booty Bay

Booty Bay is not your average cluster pay machine. Usually, cluster pays are associated with collect and cascade mechanics on larger grids, with meters that trigger features after a certain number of winning symbols have been collected. Online pokie historians will know this style was first popularized by Play n Go but recently a lot of providers have come out with similar pokies, as well as cluster pay machine that completely step outside of this formula. This time, we are in for something different, as is often the case with Push Gaming releases.

As detailed above, the grid is a fair bit smaller than we would expect from a cluster pays which typically are 7×7 or 8×8. The diminished rows and columns allow for a stark difference in the number of symbols coming in, with 64 in the 8×8 game Jammin Jars compared to 25 in Booty Bay. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, what matters are the chances and the size of wins that the features allow.

The most central feature in Booty Bay is the sandy 3×3 Hotzone in the middle of the grid. When Booty Wilds that land in the Hotzone, they will trigger the pokies core feature. The wild will hold in place and trigger a respin on all other symbols (except wilds in the Hotzone) and simultaneously increase its multiplier. Moreover, as the other symbols are respinning, the wild will move one position. Any wins will then pay out, and in wins involving the wild, its multiplier will apply. The hope then is that the wild stays in the Hotzone, which will cause the process to repeat itself for as long as there is a wild in the Hotzone.

Booty Bay multiplied win

If three wilds are in the Hotzone, they will anchor down and lock in place for three respins, ensuring they do not jump out. This is called the Triple Wild Lock feature and it is the closest to a freespins bonus this pokie has to offer. It is worth getting excited for as the centered wilds sticking will almost always generate wins with ample opportunity for wild multipliers to build up.

There are a few more features to boot; namely the Treasure Map, the Locked Wild and the Swirling Rapids features.

The Treasure Map triggers when the Map symbol lands, granting a Pick n Click style feature, awarding coin wins as multipliers of the stake. It is a simple choice of six options, with an elusive top prize of a whopping 5000 times stake.

The Swirling Rapids will also trigger by landing the corresponding symbol, pulling all Wild symbols on screen into the middle. This is definitely what you want if you have any Wilds on screen, the more the merrier. This feature can also be awarded in the aforementioned Treasure Map bonus.

Finally, the Locked Wild symbol will make any wilds that are in the Hotzone lock in place for one respin, acting as a bit of a mini version of the Triple Wild Lock feature.

Our Assessment

Booty Bay is an easy pokie to pick up. It does not demand much in terms of time spent or have any grind mechanics. It also helps that the production is on point, with a bright and colorful take on a classic theme. Push Gaming has like we have come to expect created a well-oiled machine with excellent mobile optimization. It is a little bit laid back in terms of graphics compared to some of their more grandiose slots, giving off a more basic vibe than usual, but it works well for the kind of game Booty Bay is.

The music is soothing, with easy tropical percussions and ambience of sea birds and ocean waves. It is a nice touch that wins of different sizes produce different pitch, blending in nicely with the soundtrack. However, that detail is somewhat diminished by an overwhelming majority of the symbol payouts being similarly low.

In fact, there are long periods in Booty Bay when you wonder where all the action is gone. Usually, machines without a dedicated bonus round have a high pace with small features coming in frequently, not so Booty Bay. As previously mentioned, the regular wins are also abysmal, even when bigger clusters of highpayers are formed.

Instead, most decent sized wins seem to come from the treasure map, which generally is a simple affair with wins of up to 40 or so times stake.

Where the game does not lack is potential, which comes through during the Triple Wild Lock feature. Here, the object is simple, get a cluster with all three wilds participating, and due to the multiplicative nature of the wilds, loot will be bountiful. It is also for the wilds to stay on the sandy center, which will prolong the feature and increase the multipliers.

Booty Bay epic win

Booty Bay is intriguing in the way that it has strengths and weaknesses, capable of both awkward moments where you wonder what the goal of it is, as well surprising delights when the little bonuses punch harder than you would expect. On the whole however, the machine boils down to a few end all be all moments – that is, when there are multiple wilds on the screen – with long swaths of wait in between.

The ideas behind Booty Bay are all interesting, and we applaud Push Gaming for trying something different, but as gleaned from their own lack of heavy production in this pokie, it falls a bit short of what we expect from them.
